Turtle Shells, Habitats and Life in the Water

A turtle’s shell is part of its skeleton and provides protection as it moves through its environment. These protective coverings can be smooth, bumpy, patterned or any variation in between.

Sea turtles spend most of their lives in the oceans, using their strong flippers to propel themselves forward. Freshwater turtles can be found in ponds, rivers, streams, marshes and other still or slow moving waters with sandy or muddy areas where these reptiles can rest.

Like all reptiles, turtles are ectothermic, meaning they need to regulate their body temperature using external heat sources. Sea turtles must also come up to the surface to breathe, while females make the long journey back to sandy beaches to lay their eggs.
