The letter S is a wonderful letter to practice your cursive writing with because of the way it flows.

If the s curves are made too tight in the middle it will make the letter look like it has been squeezed into a word.

Choose a letter to practice cursive handwriting from A to Z.
With this letter formation worksheet children can practice the flowing script of the cursive S.
The capital S should be formed to flow nicely with the curves and turns while the lowercase s has a smaller curve that is formed to still be seen on the line.
This printable worksheet gives extra space to work on since the curling of the S takes more movement to keep control over the script and keep the lowercase s from looking squished.
Students can ease up on their speed when forming the turns and moving the pencil carefully to keep their cursive s from being too constricted.

The letter S has an interesting history that has evolved from the ancient script of the Semitic languages.
Semitic writing used what is now known as shin or sin to represent an s like sound.
The sound was carried over into Greek writing and changed to sigma.
The sigma was changed again to make the rounded S of the modern Latin alphabet that is used today.
The evolution of the letter S is fitting because of the way it maintains curling and flowing qualities.
It is interesting to think about the ways the cursive s is even more reliant on the flowing of the script since it needs good formation when connecting to the next letter.
